On this day in history, June 16, 1822, Denmark Vesey (aka Telemaque), a Black American carpenter, is accused of planning a slave rebellion in Charleston, South Carolina, involving thousands of enslaved Black people and the subsequent murder of antebellum slave owners. He would quickly be tried and convicted, and thirty-five enslaved people would be executed by hanging.
